Wolverines edged by Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's tennis team took Westminster the distance but came up just short, falling to the Titans 5-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action early Saturday afternoon in New Wilmington.
Grove City (8-6, 5-2 PAC) got out to a strong start, taking two of the three doubles matches from the Titans (8-2, 6-0 PAC). Senior Leah Thomsen (Cary, N.C./Cary Christian) and sophomore Janine Jones (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) teamed to earn an 8-2 victory at second doubles while junior Julie Becker (Kingsport, Tenn./Homeschooled) and sophomore Taylor Bradley (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) pulled out a narrow 8-6 win at third doubles.
In singles play, Bradley rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles, and the Wolverines would split a pair of three-set matches. Freshman Maggie Manchester (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) dropped the first set 6-2 before rallying to a 6-4 win in the second and pulling out a 7-5 victory in the third. Becker also rallied from a first-set loss at fifth singles but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 6-2 in the decisive third set.
The Wolverines close out their fall regular season Wednesday when they host Thiel in a 3:30 p.m. conference match.
