Grove City opens 2004 at Clarion Invite

CLARION, Pa. -- Several Grove City College athletes turned in top-10 performances Saturday as the Grove City women's track and field team commenced the 2004 season at Clarion University's Early Bird Invitational.

Senior Sally Lewis (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) took second in both the long and triple jump for Grove City. Lewis jumped 17 feet, 9 1/4 inches in the long jump, then marked at 36-1 1/2 in the triple jump. 

Junior Christine Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) placed in four events Saturday, including a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (69.10 seconds). Rummel finished seventh in both the long (16-6 1/2) and triple jumps (34-2 1/2) and added an eighth-place finish in the 100 high hurdles (16.50).

Freshman Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) finished fourth in the high jump (5-0) while sophomore Michelle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) cleared 8-6 to take seventh in the pole vault.

Freshman thrower Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took seventh in the javelin with a throw of 114-11 1/2 and finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 111-2. Freshman Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) finished eighth in the 5000 with a time of 20:19.39 while freshman hurdler Kelly Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took 10th in the 100 hurdles, posting a time of 16.6 seconds. 

Grove City returns to action next Saturday, April 3, at Carnegie Mellon's West Penn Classic.
