Grove City competes in Western Penn Championships

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's track and field team competed in the Western Pennsylvania Championships Saturday at Carnegie Mellon University's Gesling Stadium.

Grove City took 10th in the 14-team field, which included three NCAA Division I teams, along with four Division II teams and one NAIA squad. Grove City earned 31 team points. Robert Morris won the team title with 166 points.

Senior Sally Lewis (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 1/2 inch and fifth in the triple jump (36-11 1/4). She was the top Division III performer in both events.Junior Christine Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) placed fourth in both the 100 high hurdles (16.90 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (68.92). Rummel was the top Division III athlete in the high hurdles. 

Rummel also finished eighth in the triple jump, marking at 34-6. 

Freshman Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) took fourth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 12:55 while classmate Kelly Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:12.83). 

Freshman Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 115-3 1/2. She was the top D-III performer in the discus. Classmate Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) tied for 10th in the high jump, clearing 4-10. She was the top Division III athlete in the high jump.
