Bray, Lewis double-winners at GCC Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College women's track and field performers Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and Sally Lewis (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) both picked up a pair of wins Wednesday, helping host Grove City earn third place in the 5-team Grove City College Invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Led by the two double-winners, Grove City earned 107 team points. Geneva won the team title with 234 points while Carnegie Mellon edged Grove City for second place with 111 points. Westminster (53) and Waynesburg (11) completed the field.

A freshman, Bray won both the discus (110-11) and javelin (122-9) throws. She also finished third in the shot with a mark of 33 feet, 1/2-inch. Lewis, the squad's lone senior, won the long jump with a leap of 16-6 3/4, then captured the triple jump by marking at 34-1 1/2. 

Sophomore Lauren Bigley (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished second in the 100 high hurdles (16.95), one spot ahead of junior Christine Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch). Rummel ran a 17.09 in the high hurdles. She also finished second in the long jump (14-10) and third in the triple jump (32-3 1/4). She also finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:11.82.

In the field, freshman Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) took third in the high jump, clearing 4-10. Sophomore Michelle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished fourth in the pole vault (8-0) while sophomore thrower Hannah Colian (Salem, Ohio/Salem) finished fifth in the shot put (32-6 1/4).

Borza also took fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:13.74) while freshman Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) placed fifth in the 500 (21:09). Freshman Kelly Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took fifth in the 200 dash (29.15).

Grove City will compete in the Slippery Rock University Invitational Saturday.
