Lewis wins triple jump at SRU Open

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Grove City College senior Sally Lewis (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump Saturday afternoon, helping lead the Grove City College women's track and field squad at the Slippery Rock University Open at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Lewis won the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 2 3/4 inches and finished third in the long jump at 17-8. She was the top Division III finisher in the long jump.

Freshman Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) took third in the steeplechase in 13 minutes, 8 seconds, one place ahead of classmate Michelle Mohr (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled), who ran a 13:29.

Junior Christine Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) took fourth in the triple jump (36-3) and seventh in the 100 high hurdles (16.25) while freshman thrower Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) finished seventh in both the discus (112-10) and javelin (125-3 1/2). 

Sophomore Michelle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tied for eighth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet while freshman Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) tied for 10th in the high jump, clearing 4-8. Sophomore Lauren Bigley (Washington, Pa./Trinity) placed 10th in the high hurdles (16.69) while freshman Kelly Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took 12th in the 100 dash with a time of 13.91 seconds.

Grove City will host the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships next Saturday, April 24, at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City has won five straight PAC titles.
