Grove City wins sixth straight conference title

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team secured its sixth consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title Saturday at the 2004 PAC Championships, hosted by Grove City at Robert E. Thorn Field.

The Wolverines amassed 218 team points, holding off runner-up Thiel (184) in the closing moments of Saturday's event. Six different Grove City athletes emerged as conference champions, with two earning multiple titles. 

Senior Sally Lewis (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) swept the long and triple jump for Grove City. Lewis reached 16 feet, 5 inches in the long jump, then marked at 35-11 to win the triple jump. Freshman Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) led Grove City's effort in the distance events, winning both the 1500 and 5000. 

Pierce won the 1500 with a time of 5 minutes, 14.73 seconds, then won the 5000 in a time of 20:00. She also finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 14:00.36, trailing only classmate Michelle Mohr (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled), who won with a time of 14:00.24.

Junior Christine Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) won the 400 hurdles in 67.64 seconds and also finished second to Lewis in both the long (15-3 1/4) and triple (33-4 1/2) jumps. Rummel also took third in the 100 high hurdles (16.36).

Sophomore Lauren Bigley (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won the 100 high hurdles with a time of 16.28 seconds, finishing just ahead of freshman Kelly Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who posted a time of 16.33. Sophomore Michelle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) completed Grove City's 1-2-3-4 sweep in the high hurdles. Borza won the pole vault, clearing 9-0 while freshman Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) won the high jump, clearing 4-10. 

Borza also finished second in the 400 hurdles (1:11.38) while Bigley grabbed third.

Junior Theresa Miller (Landisville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) finished second in the 10,000 (51:39) while freshman Sarah Bray (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) finished second in the javelin with a toss of 36.36 meters. Bray also took third in the discus (32.86 m) and fifth in the shot put (10.26 m). Sophomore Beth Mohr (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled) placed second in the 400 (64.34) while Michelle Mohr added a runner-up finish in the 800 (2:40.14). Michelle Mohr also took third in the 5000 (21:43).

Sophomore thrower Hannah Colian (Salem, Ohio/Salem) finished fourth in the shot put (10.48 m) and discus (32.07 m). Freshman Katie Samolovitch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) finished fifth in the javelin (23.85 m). Lewis took fourth in the 200 (28.54) and fifth in the 100 dash (13.72).

Head coach Dr. Allison Williams earned the league's Coach of the Year award. Grove City will close the regular season next Saturday at Robert E. Thorn Field with the annual Parents' Day meet.
