Grove City competes in West Penn Championships

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened the 2005 season Saturday at Carnegie Mellon University's West Penn Championships at Gesling Stadium.

Grove City placed 12th in the 14-team field with 12 team points. The field featured three NCAA Division I programs, as well as three NCAA Division II teams.

Senior Erin Claxton (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led Grove City's effort by winning the 10,000-meter run. Claxton turned in a time of 38:40.6, setting a new College record in that event.

Grove City's 400-meter relay team of freshmen Carli Gerber (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton), Julia French (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), Brittany Moore (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Kate Bender (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) took eighth with a time of 54.02 seconds.

Sophomore Ashley Metcalfe (York, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) took 10th in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 1/4 inches while sophomore Cara Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Canton Central) took 14th in the 5000 (20:21.4). Freshman Amanda Hewitt (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) took 14th in the 1500 (5:22.65).

Grove City will compete in the Geneva Invitational Friday afternoon.
