Grove City opens season at SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened the 2006 season at the Slippery Rock University Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Bill Lennox Track inside SRU's N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Freshman Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) led Grove City's effort in the unscored meet by winning the 1500-meter run. Carter posted a victorious time of 4 minutes, 55.64 seconds. She also took second in the 800 with a time of 2:28.93.

Sophomore Mary Majchrowicz (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King's Academy) took second in the 200 dash (27.52) and fourth in the 400 (1:02.40). Sophomore Kate Bender (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) finished third in the 800 (2:29.80) while junior Ashley Metcalfe (York Harbor, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) claimed third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Freshman Katie Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) took third in the 400 hurdles (1:16.50).

Freshman Megan Fellows (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) took fifth in the discus (108-8) while sophomore Julia French (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) placed sixth in the long jump (14-9 1/4).

Grove City will compete in Carnegie Mellon's West Penn Championships next Saturday.
