Grove City women compete at CMU West Penn meet

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's track and field team competed in Carnegie Mellon University's West Penn Championships Saturday afternoon at Gesling Stadium. Grove City picked up 10 team points to finish 14th in the 16-team field. Among the teams in attendance were three NCAA Division I institutions and four NCAA Division II programs.

Freshman Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) broke her own College record in the 1500 with a sixth-place time of 4 minutes, 54.09 seconds. Classmate Julia Seward (Elizabethtown, Tenn./Science Hill) took eighth in the 5000 with a time of 18:54.41 while sophomore Mary Majchrowicz (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King's Academy) finished ninth in the 400 (1:02.49).

Also for Grove City, freshman Kate Bender (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) finished 11th in the 800 (2:28.86).

In the field, freshman Megan Fellows (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) took 11th place in the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 3 inches. Junior Ashley Metcalfe (York Harbor, Maine/Portsmouth Christian) cleared 4-9 in the high jump to earn 12th place.

Grove City will compete in the Geneva Invitational Friday afternoon in Beaver Falls.
