Wolverines 5th in season-opening meet

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened the 2007 campaign Saturday afternoon by earning fifth place in the team standings at the 11-team Roanoke Invitational. Grove City earned 68 total points. Roanoke won the team title with 217 points.

Sophomore Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) helped lead the Grove City effort by winning the 5000 in 17 minutes, 47.43 seconds. Grove City also won the 1600-meter medley relay as junior Mary Majchrowicz (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King's Academy), freshman Joni Roberts (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South), junior Kate Bender (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) and Carter combined for a victorious time of 4:26.40.

Majchrowicz, Bender, junior Sam Gathers (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and junior Brittany Moore (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) took third in the traditional 1600 relay with a time of 4:25.53. Bender added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:37.34) while Majchrowicz earned fifth in the 400 (1:03.40).

Senior Ashley Metcalfe (York Harbor, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) led Grove City in the field by clearing 1.48 meters (4 feet, 10 inches) in the high jump, good for third place.

Freshman hurdler Sara Wagoner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) placed fourth in both the 100 high hurdles (17.78) and the 400 hurdles (1:15.90).

Grove City will compete in Clarion University's Early Bird Invitational Saturday, March 24.
