Grove City opens 2008 season

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened the 2008 season Tuesday afternoon with an unscored meet against Clarion University at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City athletes won seven total events -- three on the track and four in the field.

Senior Mary Majchrowicz (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King's Academy) won the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 1.80 seconds while junior Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) won the 5000 in 19:33.84. Junior Sarah Hirsh (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and freshman Marti Griwac (Plymouth, Minn./Lancaster Central) tied for first in the 3000 steeplechase with a mark of 14:35.00.

Senior Brittany Moore (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) won the long jump with a leap of 4.29 meters while freshman Kate Balmer (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) took first in the triple jump with a mark of 9.95m. Junior Megan Fellows (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) won the discus with a toss of 30.84m.

In the pole vault, junior Jenny Hogan (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) cleared 2.31m to earn victory.

Grove City will return to action Saturday at the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational in Wheeling, W. Va.
