Wolverines take 8th at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team placed eighth out of 22 teams at Wheeling Jesuit's Bill Van Horne Invitational Saturday. The Wolverines earned 37 points to finish as the top Division III team at the meet. California (Pa.) won the event with 119 points.

Sophomore Sara Fisher (Brunswick, Md./Jefferson) paced Grove City's effort by winning the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 53.78 seconds. That time qualifies Fisher for the ECAC Championships.

Junior Hannah Tubb (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) placed third in the 800 and set a new Grove City record in that event with a time of 2:19.87. She broke the previous record of 2:21.40, set by Julie Clinefelter in 1992. Tubb finished as the top Division III performer in the 800.

Sophomore Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) earned third in the 5,000 (18:20.21) while freshman Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) earned fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:53.68. Skorup finished as the top D-III performer in that race.

Senior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) placed sixth in the 1,500 in 4:54.34. She finished as the top Division III runner in that event. Pierce added a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 (18:44.12). Pierce finished one spot ahead of senior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) in the 5,000. Fryan took eighth with a time of 18:45.39.

In the field, freshman Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led the Wolverines by taking fourth in the triple jump with a best mark of 32 feet, 3 inches. Bishop finished as the top Division III entry in the triple jump.

Grove City will compete in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational next Saturday, April 2.
