Grove City takes 4th at conference meet

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team placed fourth at the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Bethany College's Bison Stadium. The Wolverines accumulated 111 total points, their highest total at the conference championships since 2006. Washington & Jefferson won the team title with 156 points, followed by Westminster (146) and Waynesburg (124).

Sophomore Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) earned the conference's Track Most Valuable Performer award after earning three victories during the championships. She won the 10,000 Friday night with a victorious time of 40 minutes, 6.42 seconds. Saturday, Fisher prevailed in both the 1500 (4:58.26) and the 5000 (18:32.19).

Junior Hannah Tubb (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) won the 800 meters with a conference- and school-record time of 2:18.45.

Fisher's win in the 1500 led a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep for the Wolverines in that event. Sophomore Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) earned second place with a time of 5:00.89, one spot ahead of senior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central). Pierce took third in 5:01.48.

Senior Kate McRoberts (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned fourth in 5:06.06 and freshman Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York) finished fifth in 5:07.74.

Grove City also placed four runners in the top five of the 5000. Pierce earned runner-up (18:57.27), one place ahead of Smith (19:00.23). Senior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) finished fifth with a time of 20:05.43.

Pierce also finished third in the 10,000 (40:32.50) and Smith captured fourth in that event (40:58.27).

Senior Kate Balmer (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) led Grove City in the sprints by taking third in the 100 dash (13.18) and fifth in the 200 (26.96).

Clawson finished fourth in the 800 (2:28.89) and Pierce took fifth (2:29.18). Freshman Grace Postma (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin) earned sixth in the 800 (2:31.32). Freshman Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) earned fourth in the 3000 steeplechase (12:20.33). Grove City finished fifth in both relay events.

The 400-meter relay team of Balmer, freshman Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), freshman Annelise Larsen (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) and junior Christen Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson) posted a time of 53.11 seconds. Clawson, Postma, Tubb and freshman Austin Powell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) took fifth in the 1600 relay (4:17.31).

Bishop led Grove City in the field events with a fifth-place effort in the triple jump. She posted a best leap of 32 feet, 8 1/4 inches.
