Wolverines compete at W&J Invite

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team competed in the unscored Washington & Jefferson Invitational Saturday at Cameron Stadium.

Three Grove City runners posted runner-up finishes Saturday. Sophomore Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) took second in the 3000 steeplechase with a school-record time of 11 minutes, 38.15 seconds. Cessar's time broke the previous record of 11:52.28, set by sophomore Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) March 24 at Wheeling Jesuit.

Junior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) finished second in the 5000 (18:29.74) and freshman Mara Womer (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) took second in the 400 hurdles (1:10.54). Womer also took fifth in the 100 high hurdles in 17.55 seconds.

Freshman Lauren McGarvey (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) took fifth in the 400 (1:04.02). McGarvey, Womer, freshman Emma Rudolf (Birchrunville, Pa./Homeschooled) and freshman Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) combined for a fifth-place finish in the 1600-meter relay (4:24.06).

McGarvey, Womer, sophomore Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and sophomore Lydia Caissy (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) placed sixth in the 400-meter relay in 53.55 seconds.

Bishop led Grove City's effort in the field events by taking seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 1/4 inch.

Grove City returns to action April 14 at the Westminster Invitational.
