Wolverines take 4th at conference meet

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team concluded the 2012 regular season Saturday by finishing fourth at the two-day Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Geneva College at the Merriman Complex. Grove City finished with 103 team points in the eight-team field, trailing only Westminster (188.5), Waynesburg (138.5) and Washington & Jefferson (119).

Two Grove City performers posted runner-up finishes to help lead the Wolverine effort. Junior Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) highlighted Friday night's session by taking second in the 10,000 with a time of 38 minutes, 45.02 seconds. Saturday, Smith earned runner-up in the 5000 with a time of 18:26.89.

Sophomore Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) took second in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 11:39.02. Cessar finished one spot ahead of sophomore Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich), who finished third in 11:50.28.

Junior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) took third in the 10,000 (38:59.77) and also finished third in the 5000 (18:36.80) while sophomore Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York) placed third in the 800 (2:28.42). Freshman Mara Womer (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned third in the 400 hurdles (1:09.88). Womer joined freshman Lauren McGarvey (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney), freshman Emma Rudolf (Birchrunville, Pa./Homeschooled) and freshman Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Pa./Columbiana) on Grove City's 1600-meter relay team that recorded a third-place time of 4:23.06.

Sophomore Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led Grove City in the field events by finishing third in the triple jump. Bishop recorded a season-best leap of 33 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Freshman Ellie Stoffer (Canfield, Ohio/South Range) paced Grove City's throwers with a fourth-place finish in the javelin (115-3).

Cessar took fourth in the 800 (2:28.75), one place ahead of junior Grace Postma (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin). Postma finished fifth in 2:28.76. Smith earned fifth in the 1500 (4:57.03) while Womer finished sixth in the 100 high hurdles (17.20). Bishop, Womer, sophomore Lydia Caissy (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and freshman Katie Bailey (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) combined for a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter relay (52.85).

Kimpel finished seven in the 800 (2:30.62) while junior Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) took seventh in the 1500 (5:06.22). Sophomore Austin Powell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) placed eighth in the 800 (2:31.47) while Skorup snared eighth in the 5000 (19:11.57). Bishop finished eighth in the long jump with a best mark of 14-11 1/4.

The 2012 Championships marked the first time that the league awarded points to the top eight finishers. In previous seasons, the conference scored only the first six places in each event.

Several Grove City athletes have qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships May 17-18 in Albany, N.Y.
