Wolverines open season at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened the 2013 season Saturday by competing in California University of Pennsylvania's Early Bird Invitational at Adamson Stadium. Three Grove City performers qualified for the ECAC Championships, including senior Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker), who won the 5000 meters with a victorious time of 17 minutes, 58.99 seconds.

Freshman Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) took second in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.21 seconds, which ranked first among Division III performers. She qualified for the ECAC Championships in that event. Lowe also set a new school record in the 100 hurdles, breaking the former standard of 15.74 seconds, set by Becky Berad in 1993. That had been the longest-standing track event record at Grove City.

Lowe, junior Sadie Malone (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mount Vernon), freshman Allison Blain (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and sophomore Mara Womer (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) captured second in the 400-meter relay with a 52.90 clocking.

Junior Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) placed second in the 3000 steeplechase (12:02.72) while senior Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) placed third in the 10,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 39:33.35.

Senior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) earned fourth in the 5000 with a time of 18:45.86. Senior Melissa Knepper (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) led Grove City's field athletes by taking fourth in the javelin with a best throw of 110 feet, 4 inches.

Grove City returns to action Friday, April 5 at the Slippery Rock University Invitational.
