Wolverines win Westminster Invitational

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team captured the team title at the Westminster Invitational Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. The Wolverines rolled to the team title by earning 156.25 team points. Waynesburg took second with 131.75 and Penn State Behrend finished third at 126.

Freshman Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and senior Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) each earned individual wins for the Wolverines. Lowe swept the hurdle events while Fisher won the 5000. Lowe took the 100 high hurdles in 15.56 seconds, then won the 400 hurdles in a school-record time of 1:05.73. That time also surpasses the ECAC Championships qualifying standard.

Fisher won the 5000 with a time of 18 minutes, 45.55 seconds.

Grove City's 1600-meter relay team of freshman Allison Blain (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), sophomore Mara Womer (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), sophomore Adrienne Scrima (Westtown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and sophomore Lauren McGarvey (Reynoldsville, Pa./Punxsutawney) closed the meet by earning second with a time of 4:16.92.

Individually, three Grove City performers posted runner-up finishes. Senior Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) took second in the 10,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 37:50.98. Junior Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) captured second in the steeplechase with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 11:53.59 and junior Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York) earned second in the 1500 (5:03.79).

Clawson added a third-place finish in the 800 (2:29.45) while Womer earned third in the 400 hurdles (1:10.59). Skorup took third in the 5000 (19:04.70) and junior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) finished third in the steeplechase with a time of 12:00.72. Senior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) took third in the 10,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 38:11.55.

Also for Grove City, freshman Emily Rabenold (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) qualified for the ECAC meet in the 10,000 with a fourth-place time of 39:29.25. Freshman Anna Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) placed fourth in the 1500 (5:12.53) and sophomore Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) earned fourth in the 800 (2:31.35).

Two Grove City field athletes also posted fourth-place finishes. Junior Sadie Malone (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mount Vernon) took fourth in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Sophomore Ellie Stoffer (Canfield, Ohio/South Range) earned fourth in the javelin with a best toss of 109-7. Senior Melissa Knepper (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned fifth in the javelin with a throw of 108-5 1/2.

Kimpel took fifth in the 1500 (5:15.70) and senior Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) placed fifth in the 10,000 (39:50.15). Blain captured fifth in the 400 with a 1:03.17 clocking.

Grove City will compete in the Presidents' Athletic Conference North Quad Thursday in Beaver Falls, Pa.
