Grove City opens at Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team opened its 2014 season Saturday afternoon by competing in California (Pa.) University's Early Bird Invitational. The Wolverines posted wins in seven events at the unscored meet.

Three of Grove City's seven victories came in field events. Freshman Katelyn Hess (Medina, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned wins in both the high and triple jumps. She cleared 4 feet, 11 inches to win the high jump, then marked at 35-1 in the triple jump.

Freshman Melanie Packard (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 8 inches.

Sophomore Emily Rabenold (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) won the 5000 meters in 17 minutes, 55.39 seconds while senior Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) took the 3000 steeplechase in 11:48.15.

Sophomore Eliza Lowe (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) won the 100 high hurdles in 15.46 seconds.

Rabenold, senior Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York), senior Austin Powell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and junior Caroline Kimpel (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) won the 3200-meter relay in 10:00.20.

Lowe, Rabenold, Skorup and the 3200 relay all qualified for the ECAC Championships Saturday.

Grove City will host Geneva and Chatham next Saturday at Robert E. Thorn Field.
