Grove City 3rd at conference championships

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team placed third out of 10 teams Saturday at the 2016 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Bethany College at Rine Field. The Wolverines finished the meet with 96 team points, trailing only Waynesburg (145 points) and Westminster (142).

Three Grove City performers earned individual victories during the two-day meet. Sophomore Margi Haiss (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) won the discus with a Grove City-record throw of 125 feet, 11 inches. Meanwhile, junior Lydia Keiper (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) won the 5000 with a victorious time of 18 minutes, 47.54 seconds.

Freshman Elizabeth Donahoe (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) won the 800 in 2:23.38.

Keiper also placed second in Friday night's 10,000 meters (38:48.64) while junior Melanie Packard (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) recorded third-place finishes in both the pole vault (10-6) and high jump (4-9 3/4). Senior Allison Blain (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) captured third in the 400 (1:00.51).

Blain, Donahoe, junior Sarah Williamson (York, Pa./Northeastern) and sophomore Melanie Wizorek (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) closed the meet by taking third in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:10.64.

Junior Lauren Pearce (Grand Rapids, Mich./Hudsonville) finished fourth in the 400 (1:00.84) while junior Rachel Watson (Jackson Center, Pa./Lakeview) took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 33-6 3/4. Williamson earned fifth in the long jump (15-11 1/2). Blain took sixth in the 200 (26.78) and Haiss claimed sixth in the javelin (109-6).

Also for Grove City, freshman Maty Zeckzer (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) placed sixth in the steeplechase (13:04.76) while junior Liv Green (Forestville, Pa./Slippery Rock) placed sixth in the 1500 (5:04.32).

Several Grove City athletes will compete May 13 at the Allegheny Invitational.
