GCC women's water polo team adds another win
WASHINGTON, PA, March 24, 2001--The Lady Wolverine water polo team, winless in 22 tries a year ago, picked up its third victory of the season Saturday, but closed the Allegheny Region round-robin tournament with a pair of losses to fall to 3-9 overall.
Junior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central) added her fourth and fifth hat tricks of the season and scored eight goals in the three matches, giving her a team-high 25 goals on the year. Hill buried three goals in the first game, while junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) and senior Brianne Leas (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) chipped in with two goals each as Grove City opened Saturday's play with an 11-6 victory over Penn State Behrend. Sophomore Sarah Grabowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry Traditional), junior Katherine Exo (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Holland), sophomore Abby Sakowski (Cleveland Hts., OH/Cleveland Hts.) and freshman Katie Flaherty (Suffield, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored a goal each. Exo made six saves on 12 shots, while Hill turned back all eight shots she faced, including a penalty shot.
Gannon outscored Grove City 9-2 in the fourth quarter to claim a 17-7 victory in the second game. Hill fired in four goals for the Lady Wolverines, Erdos tallied two and freshman Tammy Hamsher (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored one. Freshman Julie Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) stopped 17 of 34 shots.
In the nightcap, rival and tournament host Washington
& Jefferson defeated Grove City, 6-3. The Presidents led 1-0 after the first quarter, 3-1 at
halftime and 4-1 through three. Hill, Erdos and Hamsher scored a goal
apiece for GCC, while
Julie Zedaker made 16 saves on 22 shots.
