Lady Wolverines notch ninth at Southern Championship
GROVE CITY, PA, April 7, 2001--The sixth time was the charm for the Grove City College women's water polo team.
The Lady Wolverines reversed an 0-5 all-time record against arch-rival Washington & Jefferson on Saturday with a 6-5 victory that carried them to a ninth-place finish at the 12-school Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championship Tournament, hosted by Grove City College. Junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) netted three goals, freshman Jessica Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) scored twice and junior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central) buried the game-winner with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter, breaking a 5-5 tie.
After spotting W&J the first goal of the game, Erdos and Zedaker each scored in the final minute of the opening quarter, putting the Lady Wolverines ahead 2-1. The Presidents tied the game midway through the second frame before Erdos added her second goal 41 seconds before intermission, giving Grove City a 3-2 edge at half. Zedaker's second tally with 3:50 left in the third extended the Lady Wolverines' lead to 4-2, but W&J rallied with a pair of goals to even the match at 4-4 heading into the final quarter. W&J scored with 5:53 left in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead before Grove City got the equalizer a minute later when Erdos completed her hat trick. With the game tied 5-5, Hill provided the winning margin with her team-leading 40th goal of the season.
The Lady Wolverines advanced to the Ninth-Place Game, where they were handed a 5-0 victory when Salem International was unable to field a full team.
