Lady Wolverines post seventh victory
GROVE CITY, PA, April 21, 2001--After an encouraging 9-5 loss to the University of Notre Dame, the Grove City College women's water polo team defeated Penn State Behrend College, 16-13, then fell to Gannon University, 15-3, at the six-school GCC Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Wolverines finished 1-3 at the two-day event, moving their overall record to 7-20.
Grove City rallied from a 5-0 deficit against the Fighting Irish in Saturday's opener, trimming the deficit to 6-4 in the third quarter. Notre Dame recovered by outscoring the Lady Wolverines 3-1 in the fourth. Senior Brie Anne Thomas (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored a pair of goals, while junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown), freshman Jessica Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) and sophomore Abby Sakowski (Cleveland Hts., OH/Cleveland Hts.) netted a goal each.
Thomas broke a 9-9 tie against Penn State Behrend with one of her three goals against the Lady Lions and the Lady Wolverines added five more unanswered tallies in the three-goal victory. Jessica Zedaker also scored a hat trick, while Sakowski, freshman Tammy Hamsher (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg), sophomore Deb Schow (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson) and senior Brianne Leas (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) buried two goals each. Junior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central) and sophomore Rebecca Zorch (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) added one goal apiece.
Hamsher scored twice and Hill added her team-leading 44th goal of the year in the Gannon loss.
Freshman goalie Julie Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) made 21 saves on 40 shots and junior Katherine Exo (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Holland) turned back 15 of 27 shots in the three-game span.
