Lady Wolverines drop two, fall into seven-place game

REDLANDS, CA, May 5, 2001--The Grove City College women's water polo team suffered two more setbacks in their first trip to nationals Saturday, losing to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 10-3, and league rival Washington & Jefferson College, 6-5, in Redlands, California.

The eighth-seeded Lady Wolverines will compete for seventh place at the eight-team Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championships Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. PT against seventh-seeded Macalester College (MN).

Senior Brie Anne Thomas (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored twice and sophomore Abigail Sakowski (Cleveland Hts., OH/Cleveland Hts.) added a goal in the MIT loss.  Freshman net-minder Julie Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) turned back 12 of 22 shots, while her twin sister, Jessica, contributed two steals and an assist.  Senior Brianne Leas (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) and freshman Tammy Hamsher (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) also had two steals apiece.

Grove City and W&J were tied 3-3 after three quarters before the Presidents outscored the Lady Wolverines, 3-2, in the final frame.  Junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) buried two goals, while Jessica Zedaker recorded a goal and three assists.  Thomas and Hamsher also tallied a goal each.  Julie Zedaker saved 11 of 17 shots on goal.
