GCC closes season with shutout victory at nationals
REDLANDS, CA, May 6, 2001--Junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) scored three goals and freshman goalkeeper Julie Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) stopped every shot she faced as Grove City College shut out Macalester College (MN), 5-0, to claim seventh-place at the Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championships Sunday in Redlands, CA.
Zedaker made 15 saves and added four steals to help the eighth-seeded Lady Wolverines leap frog seventh-seeded Macalester in the final standings. For her efforts, Zedaker received an All-Tournament honorable mention.
Julie's twin sister, Jessica Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek), provided a two-way spark with five steals and two assists. Senior Brianne Leas (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) and freshman Tammy Hamsher (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) accounted for the other two Lady Wolverine goals.
Erdos' hat trick gave her a team-high six tallies at nationals.
The win marked the first shutout in the two-year history of the program, not counting a 5-0 forfeit victory over Salem International earlier this season.
Grove City finished the season 8-24 overall after going 0-22 in its inaugural campaign.
