GCC takes ninth at Southerns, awaits national bid

VILLANOVA, PA, April 21, 2002—The Grove City College women's water polo team virtually clinched a return trip to the Collegiate III National Championship Tournament, defeating Mercyhurst College, 12-5, and Penn State Behrend College, 5-4, on Sunday to place ninth overall at the Southern Championships, held at Villanova University's Swim Center.

A much anticipated clash against arch-rival Washington & Jefferson College never materialized when the Presidents were upset by Penn State Behrend earlier in the day, 8-7.

Sophomore Jessica Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) scored twice against Penn State Behrend and her twin sister, goalkeeper Julie Zedaker (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek), made 12 saves on 16 shots to secure the one-goal victory in the ninth-place game.  Senior Adrienne Hill (Portville, NY/Portville Central), sophomore Katie Flaherty (Suffield, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Lindsay Smith (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Christian) contributed a goal each.  Hill and Jessica Zedaker added five and three steals, respectively, while senior Laura Petroski (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) chipped in with two steals.

The Zedaker twins highlighted the win over Mercyhurst as Jessica fired in a team-high four goals and Julie stopped 19 of 24 shots on goal.  Sophomore Tammy Hamsher (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored three goals and added a team-best four steals.  Hill and Flaherty netted two goals apiece and freshman Chelsea Rasmussen (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) tossed in one.  Jessica Zedaker, Petroski, Rasmussen and junior Sarah Grabowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry Academy) were each credited with a pair of steals.

The Lady Wolverines placed ninth at last year's Southern Championships and advanced to the national tournament in Redlands, Ca.  Nationals will be held this year in Minnesota.

Grove City's record moved to 6-14 overall.
