GCC women pick up first victory in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team picked up its first victory of the 2003 season with a 6-4 victory over Penn State Behrend Saturday night at the University of Michigan Invitational.

The Lady Wolverines opened the weekend with an 18-2 setback against host Michigan and a 10-5 loss to Gannon. Grove City also dropped a 5-0 decision to Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon.

Junior Jessica Zedaker (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) fired in three goals for Grove City against Behrend and added two assists and five steals. Freshman Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), senior Lisa Gregor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) and junior Katie Flaherty (Suffield, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) all scored for Grove City, also.

Julie Zedaker (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) stopped 18 shots and also recorded two steals and an assist. Senior Abby Sakowski (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) and Tammy Hamsher (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both had two steals. Grove City led 6-2 in the fourth period before Behrend cut the lead in half late.

Against Michigan, Flaherty and Jessica Zedaker both scored while Hamsher had an assist. Julie Zedaker had 10 saves and three steals while Jessica Zedaker recorded four steals. Schade added a pair of thefts.

Grove City fell behind 8-2 in the first half against Gannon before making a second-half charge in Saturday's second match. Jessica Zedaker scored three times and had three steals while fellow junior Hamsher scored twice. Julie Zedaker had seven saves, four steals and a pair of assists while sophomore Chelsea Rasmussen (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) also assisted on two goals while Flaherty had an assist. Gregor garnered three steals.
