Grove City downs Behrend at D-III National Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Grove City (9-26) opened the day with an 8-5 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology but rebounded for a 7-5 triumph over Penn State Behrend.

Freshman Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and junior Katie Flaherty (Suffield, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) both scored twice against MIT while senior Abby Sakowski (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) also added a goal. Junior Jessica Zedaker (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) distributed three assists and added six steals while junior Tammy Hamsher (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley)  and junior Julie Zedaker (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) each had five steals.

Senior Lisa Gregor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) tallied an assist and three steals while freshman Cecilia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) also had an assist. Julie Zedaker stopped eight shots. 

In inter-pool play, Grove City bounced in-state rival Penn State Behrend 7-5 as six different Lady Wolverines scored. Hamsher scored twice while Jessica Zedaker, senior Sarah Grabowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional Academy), Gregor, Schade and Sakowski all scored once. Jessica Zedaker chalked up nine steals and a pair of assists while Hamsher assisted on two goals. 

Schade had a pair of steals and an assist while Gregor and Flaherty each had assists. 

Grove City continues play Sunday as the Lady Wolverines will play Macalester (Minn.) at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
