Grove City earns first wins of 2005

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned its first win of the 2005 season Friday with a 7-2 win over host Carthage at the Carthage Invitational.

Later Friday afternoon, the Wolverines (2-8) dropped an 8-0 decision to Wheaton (Ill.) but bounced back for a 9-3 win over Illinois Wesleyan Friday night.

Against Carthage, sophomore Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) fired in four goals while junior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) scored twice. Sophomore Virginia Larsen (Seattle, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) also scored in the victory.

Cecelia Larsen (Seattle, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), Virginia Larsen and Ashlee Earl (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) all had two assists. Schade recorded five steals while freshman goalkeeper Keala Walter (Newburg, Ore./Newburg) stopped 15 of 17 shots.

Walter also set a new Grove City single-match and single-season record by stopping two 4-meter penalty shots in the victory.

Against Wheaton, Walter stopped 21 shots while Virginia Larsen had three steals.

Schade fired in three goals and assisted on three others against Illinois Wesleyan, helping lead Grove City to its second win of the day. Virginia Larsen scored twice while freshman Christie Hebda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), junior Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled), Ewing and freshman Jennifer Johnston (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) all scored once.

Ewing also had two assists while Cecelia Larsen, Magee and Emily Arndt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Robinson Twp. Christian) all had one assist. Schade tallied six steals while Magee and Gabrielle O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Homeschooled) both had three thefts.

Walter stopped 10 of 13 shots. The Wolverines will play Washington University (Mo.) at 5 p.m. Eastern Saturday afternoon. Grove City closes the two-day event against Macalester at 8 p.m. Eastern.
