Hoosiers top Grove City in CWPA Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped a 16-1 decision to Division I Indiana University Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships at College Pool.

The top-seeded Hoosiers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) scored Grove City's lone goal while freshman Christie Hebda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) had the assist. Juniors Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) both had two steals. Ewing also blocked one shot.

Freshman goalkeeper Keala Walter (Newburg, Ore./Newburg) stopped 10 shots.

Grove City (6-14) will play No. 4 seed Mercyhurst in the consolation round at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. No. 6 Slippery Rock will play No. 7 seed Penn State Behrend at 11:15 a.m. In the semifinals, Indiana will meet fifth-seeded Washington and Jefferson at 12:30 p.m. with No. 2 Michigan playing No. 3 Gannon at 1:45.

Friday night, Washington and Jefferson nipped Mercyhurst, 5-4, Michigan earned an 18-4 win over Penn State Behrend and Gannon warded off Slippery Rock's upset bid, 8-7.
