Wolverines earn 7th with win over Behrend

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned seventh place Saturday afternoon at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships with a 9-4 win over seventh-seeded Penn State Behrend at the Grove City College Pool. The Wolverines (7-15) entered the tournament as the eighth seed.

Sophomore Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) fired in three goals for Grove City while sophomore Virginia Larsen (Seattle, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and junior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) each scored twice. Junior Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) forced in a goal while freshman goalkeeper Keala Walter (Newburg, Ore./Newburg) closed the first period with a buzzer-beating goal from mid-pool, her first collegiate goal.

Walter's goal knotted the match at 2-2 and the Wolverines eventually surged to a 5-2 lead by halftime. Junior Cecelia Larsen (Seattle, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) had two assists while Schade, Ewing and Virginia Larsen all assisted on one goal. Junior Ashlee Earl (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) had two steals while Walter blocked 16 of 20 shots.

Earlier in the day, Grove City dropped a 12-5 decision to fourth-seeded Mercyhurst Saturday morning. Grove City forged a 4-4 tie at halftime but the Lakers scored four third-period goals to break the match open.

Ewing scored three goals while Schade and Virginia Larsen both scored once. Cecelia Larsen had four assists while Schade had one assist. Cecelia Larsen and Magee both recorded three steals. In goal, freshman Walter stopped 10 shots.
