Grove City earns first win of 2006

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team picked up its first victory of the 2006 season Saturday afternoon, earning a 7-6 double-overtime victory over Wheaton (Ill.) at the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invitational.

Earlier Saturday, Grove City fell to Michigan, 11-1. The Wolverines (1-6) also dropped a 14-3 decision to Cal Lutheran Saturday.

Against Wheaton, freshman Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) broke a 6-6 tie in the second overtime with her second goal of the match, putting the Wolverines ahead to stay.

McRuer and junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) both scored twice against the Thunder while senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), senior Ashlee Earl (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) and freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) all scored once. Schade also had two assists while Earl, McRuer, Kerchner, senior Cecelia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and senior Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) all had one assist.

Kerchner also had three steals. Walter stopped 16 shots in goal to earn the victory.

Schade scored Grove City's lone goal against Michigan on a penalty shot. Freshman C.J. Foldberg (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero) stopped 10 shots while Ewing recorded three steals.

Kerchner, Schade and junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) all scored once aganist Cal Lutheran. Ewing and Virginia Larsen both had assists. In goal, Walter tallied 12 saves.

Grove City will host Slippery Rock Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
