Wolverines go 2-2 at own invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo went 2-2 Saturday in the Wolverines' Grove City Invitational at the Grove City College Pool. Grove City opened the day with an 11-2 victory over Utica, followed by a 13-3 win over Queens (N.Y.).

However, the Wolverines (3-9) closed the night with an 8-6 loss to Gannon and a 9-1 defeat against Mercyhurst.

Junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) fired in four goals against Utica while junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), senior Cecelia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and freshman Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) all scored twice in the win. Senior Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) added a goal in the victory.

McRuer, sophomore goalkeeper Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) and freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) all had two assists. Ewing, senior Emily Billmyre (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and sophomore Caroline Walker (Greensburg, Pa./Homeschooled) each distributed one assist.

Freshman C.J. Foldberg (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero) recorded a team-high six steals. Grove City had 24 steals as a team. In goal, Walter stopped 10 of 12 shots faced.

Grove City jumped out to a 7-0 first-period lead against Queens en route to the 13-3 win. Foldberg fired in three goals while McRuer, Walker and freshman Whitney Baur (Ambler, Pa./North Penn) all scored a pair of goals. Virginia Larsen, Kerchner, senior Ashlee Earl (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) and sophomore LeAna Negron (Salem, N.J./Homeschooled) all scored once.

Walter doled out three assists while Foldberg and Cecelia Larsen both recorded two assists. Ewing, Billmyre and Walker all had one assist. Walter had five saves while Foldberg recorded six saves.

Against Gannon, Grove City rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit to tie the match in the third quarter but the Golden Knights scored twice in the fourth period to earn the win. Virginia Larsen and senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) both scored twice for Grove City. Ewing and Kerchner each scored once. Cecelia Larsen, Kerchner and Walter all had two assists. In goal, Walter stopped 15 of 23 shots faced.

Grove City closed the quadruple-header by falling to visiting Mercyhurst in the nightcap. The Wolverines fell behind 3-0 in the first period and could not recover. Schade scored Grove City's lone goal with Walter supplying the assist. Cecelia Larsen, Ewing and Magee all registered three steals while Walter stopped nine shots.

Grove City will compete in the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
