Wolverines compete at Wheaton Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened play in the second annual Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational Friday by splitting their first two matches of the day. The Wolverines (5-10) opened play with a 12-4 victory over Carthage but fell to host Wheaton late Friday afternoon, 6-3.

Late Friday night, the Wolverines improved to 2-1 with an 8-5 victory over Macalester.

Junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) fired in four goal against Carthage while senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) scored three times. Freshman Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) scored twice while junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and freshman Monica Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each fired in one goal.

Kerchner also had three assists while senior Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) and senior Cecelia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) both dished out two assists.

In goal, sophomore Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) stopped 13 shots. Cecelia Larsen and McRuer both recorded six steals each against Carthage.

Ewing, Virginia Larsen and McRuer all scored once against Wheaton. McRuer and Virginia Larsen each had one assist. McRuer also recorded six steals while Walter posted 12 saves.

McRuer registered three goals against Macalester while Virginia Larsen scored twice. Ewing, Kerchner and freshman C.J. Foldberg (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero) all scored one goal each. Schade doled out three assists while Cecelia Larsen, Virginia Larsen, McRuer and senior Ashlee Earl (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) each had one assist.

McRuer also tallied seven steals while Walter stopped 13 shots in goal.
