Wolverines fall to Mercyhurst, Gannon

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team fell to 8-12 overall and 1-5 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division play Saturday afternoon with a pair of home losses at the Grove City College Pool.

Mercyhurst earned a 5-0 win over Grove City in the first half of the Wolverines' doubleheader while Gannon pulled out a 5-4, double-overtime win in the nightcap.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-1 lead against Gannon but the Golden Knights scored twice in the second half to forge a 3-3 tie. Gannon scored twice in the first overtime period to take a 5-3 lead but Grove City junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) scored at the end of the first overtime, cutting the lead in half.

However, the Wolverines could not pull even during the second extra period.

Larsen also scored in the first half while senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) each scored once. Ewing and freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) both had one assist. In goal, sophomore Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) stopped 14 of 19 shots.

Grove City opened the day with a 5-0 loss to Mercyhurst. The visiting Lakers led 1-0 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

Grove City will host Washington and Jefferson Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in CWPA Western Division action.
