Wolverines open play at Collegiate III Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened play in the Collegiate III National Championships Friday afternoon at the University of Redlands. Grove City (9-17) fell to Whittier in the Friday's opener, 13-2, before dropping a 10-2 decision to top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer late Friday afternoon.

Junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and senior Cecelia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) each scored once against Whittier. Freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and freshman C.J. Foldberg (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero) each had one assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) stopped 11 shots for Grove City, including one 4-meter penalty shot.

Kerchner and Ewing both scored once against Pomona-Pitzer while junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and Foldberg both had assists. Walter stopped 17 of 27 shots and also tallied two steals. Senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) blocked three shots, setting a new Grove City single-match record.

The Wolverines will wrap up pool play Saturday against California State University-East Bay at noon Eastern.
