Grove City falls twice at Collegiate III Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team went 0-2 Saturday at the Collegiate III National Championships, hosted by the University of Redlands. Grove City (9-19) fell to California State-East Bay in its final pool play match, 6-5. The Wolverines then dropped a 9-6 decision to California-Santa Cruz in inter-pool play Saturday afternoon.

Junior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) fired in two goals against East Bay while junior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), senior Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) and senior Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) all scored once. Larsen, freshman Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and freshman Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) all had one assist.

McRuer also recorded four steals for the Wolverines. In goal, sophomore Keala Walter (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) stopped 10 shots.

Larsen also scored twice against Cal-Santa Cruz while Ewing, Schade, Kerchner and McRuer each had one goal. Schade also assisted on a pair of goals while Kerchner, Walter and senior Cecelia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) all recorded one assist. Walter registered 13 saves in goal for Grove City.

Grove City will wrap up play against Wheaton (Ill.) Saturday night in the seventh-place match at 10:45 p.m. EDT.
