Wolverines open 2007 season

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2007 season Saturday with three matches at the Bucknell Invitational. Grove City opened play with a 10-5 setback against Iona. The Wolverines dropped an 11-4 decision to 2006 NCAA Division I Championship Tournament qualifier Marist before suffering a 5-4 loss to Villanova in Saturday's nightcap.

Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) fired in three goals against Iona while senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) each scored once. McRuer's goal closed Iona's lead to 7-5 in the third period after the Gaels had jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Iona scored three times down the stretch to seal the win, however.

Ewing, McRuer, sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) all had one assist. In goal, junior Keala Walter (Kenaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped eight shots.

Against Marist, Ewing scored three times while Juncker added a goal and two assists. Larsen and freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also had assists while Walter posted nine saves in goal.

Grove City closed the opening day of the season Saturday night against Villanova. Ewing scored twice while Kerchner and Stiebler also tallied goals. Freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) assisted on two of Grove City's four goals while Juncker added an assist. Walter stopped eight of 13 shots.

Grove City will face Wagner Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
