Grove City earns first win of 2007

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team split a pair of matches Thursday night at California State University-East Bay. Grove City (1-5) opened the night with a 12-4 win over Cal State-Maritime. The Wolverines then dropped the nightcap to host East Bay, 13-5.

Grove City stormed out to a 9-0 lead by halftime against CSU-Maritime. Senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), freshman Whitney Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all scored twice for the Wolverines.

Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), senior Meghan Kincaid (Eagle River, Alaska/Homeschooled), junior Caroline Walker (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) all scored once. Kerchner also assisted on two goals while Baur and sophomore Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) both tallied one assist.

In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped all five shots faced. Freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also saw time in goal and stopped six of 10 shots faced.

Grove City jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the night cap against host California State-East Bay but the Wolverines could not hold on for the sweep. Stiebler scored twice for Grove City while Ewing, Kerchner and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) all scored one goal apiece. Freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), Kerchner, McRuer and Thompson all dished out one assist.

McRuer recorded a team-high four steals while Thompson added three takeaways. Walter stopped seven shots in goal.

Grove City will face California State-San Bernardino and Cal State-Bakersfield Friday.
