Wolverines fall twice in California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the University of California at Santa Cruz's "Slugfest." Grove City fell to the host Banana Slugs, 7-5. Grove City also fell to California State-Monterey Bay, 11-6, in the nightcap.

Against UC-Santa Cruz, the Wolverines (1-9) fell behind 4-0 early before closing to within 6-5 late in the fourth period. However, Grove City could not complete the comeback.

Seniors Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) each scored twice for Grove City while sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) added a goal. Sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) tallied three steals while junior goalkeeper Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped a dozen shots.

Kerchner, Larsen, Ewing, McRuer, freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) all scored once against CSU-Monterey Bay. Larsen and Ewing each had assists.

Again, Grove City fell behind early, spotting CSU-Monterey Bay an early 3-0 lead. Grove City pulled to within 8-6 in the fourth period before Monterey Bay pulled away late.

McRuer and Walter both had three steals. Walter had 8 saves in goal for Grove City.

The Wolverines will host CWPA Western Division foe Penn State Behrend Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
