Grove City rolls past Behrend in home opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Twelve different Grove City players scored Tuesday night as the host Wolverines stormed to a 19-5 victory over visiting Penn State Behrend in CWPA Western Division women's water polo action at the Grove City College Pool.
Grove City jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first period and extended the lead to 15-2 by halftime. Senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) fired in four goals for Grove City while freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored three times. Freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) both scored twice.
Sophomore Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), sophomore Monica Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake), senior Meghan Kincaid (Eagle River, Alaska/Homeschooled), junior Valerie Smith (Essex, Vt./Trinity Baptist), junior Ria Swanekamp (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) and junior Caroline Walker (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) all scored once.
Thompson also distributed two assists while Walker and freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each had one assist.
In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped five shots in the first half while Stiebler tallied eight second-half saves.
Grove City will face Queens (N.Y.) Friday night at 8:10 p.m. in the Penn State Behrend Invitational. The Wolverines (2-9 overall, 1-0 Western Division) will face Utica, Carthage and Siena Saturday.
