Wolverines go 2-1 at Behrend Invite

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team won two of three matches Saturday in the Penn State Behrend Invitational at the Junker Center. Grove City opened the day with a 9-2 victory over Utica. The Wolverines then picked up their fourth straight victory by pulling out a 7-5 decision over Carthage.

Grove City then dropped the nightcap to NCAA Division I Siena Saturday night, 3-2.

Against Utica, Grove City (5-10) led 6-0 at halftime and extended the lead to 7-0 early in the third period. Seven different Wolverines scored in the win. Sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored twice while senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), sophomore Monica Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and senior Meghan Kincaid (Eagle River, Alaska/Homeschooled) all scored one goal apiece.

McRuer also assisted on two goals while Ewing added one assist. Thompson recorded five steals while Ewing and Kerchner both had three steals. In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) posted eight saves on 10 shots.

Grove City bolted to a 5-0 lead against Carthage before holding on for the win. Six different Wolverines rang up goals, including a pair from McRuer. Sophomore Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), Ewing, Gigliotti, Juncker and Thompson all scored once. Kerchner assisted on two goals while Thompson also recorded an assist.

McRuer and Thompson both posted three steals. In goal, Walter notched 13 saves.

Kerchner and McRuer both scored in the first half Saturday night against Siena. Kerchner also assisted on McRuer's goal. Walter stopped 19 of 22 shots faced.

The five total goals in the match ties the Grove City program record for fewest combined goals in one match. Six of Grove City's 10 losses have been against NCAA Division I teams. Grove City is 4-2 against Division III squads.

Grove City will compete in the University of Michigan Wolverine Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
