Grove City drops two in Western Division play

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team fell to 2-2 in the CWPA's Western Division Saturday with a pair of home losses to NCAA Division I institutions. Grove City opened play with a 19-10 setback against Michigan. Saturday night, Indiana handed Grove City a 14-4 defeat.

In the opener, Grove City (6-14 overall) fell behind 5-0 in the first period but eventually closed to within four by halftime. However, Michigan (14-10, 1-0) broke the match open with seven third-quarter goals.

Freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) scored twice in each half for Grove City while senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) added three goals. Freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice in the second half and senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) added one goal.

Sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) assisted on four goals for Grove City while Thompson, sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake), freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) each had one assist.

Junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped 10 shots while Stiebler made two saves in the fourth quarter.

In the nightcap, Kerchner, McRuer, Stiebler and Wilson all scored once. Kerchner also had two assists while Walter stopped six shots.

Grove City will compete in the Carthage (Wis.) Invitational Friday and Saturday.
