Grove City wins three in Wisconsin

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned three victories at the Carthage Invitational Friday. The Wolverines (9-14) opened play with a 14-7 win over Colorado College before handing Penn State Behrend a 16-1 defeat. Friday night, Grove City closed play with an 11-3 win over host Carthage. 

Freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) fired in four goals and added a pair of assists to help key the win over Colorado College. Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) scored three times. Sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both tossed in a pair of goals.

Senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) all scored once against Colorado College. Kerchner assisted on three goals while Larsen, Thompson and Wilson each tallied two assists.

Kerchner also recorded four steals. In goal, junior goalkeeper Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped nine shots.

Ewing and Wilson both scored four times each against Penn State Behrend. McRuer contributed three goals and a pair of assists while Thompson scored twice. Larsen, Kerchner and freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) all added a goal. Stiebler had two assists while McRuer recorded four steals. Walter stopped seven of eight shots faced.

In the nightcap, Grove City broke open a tight match by outscoring Carthage 9-2 in the second half. Wilson scored a career-high five goals in the win while Ewing and Thompson each scored two times. Juncker and Kerchner both scored once. McRuer and Stiebler both distributed two assists while Thompson, Kerchner, Wilson and Juncker all handed out one assist.

Wilson also helped lead Grove City defensively with six steals. Walter stopped nine of 12 shots.

Grove City will face Wheaton (Ill.), Washington & Jefferson and Macalester Saturday in the second day of the Carthage Invitational.
