Slippery Rock nips Grove City in OT

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team had its six-match win streak snapped Tuesday night as host Slippery Rock pulled out a 12-11, sudden-death overtime victory over the visiting Wolverines in a CWPA Western Division match at Morrow Field House. Grove City is now 12-15 overall and 2-3 in the Western Division.

Grove City rallied from an early 5-2 deficit and eventually forged a 10-10 tie by the end of regulation. Each team scored once in the two three-minute overtime periods but Slippery Rock scored the game-winner in the sudden death period.

Seven different Wolverine players scored Tuesday night. Senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake), freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all scored a pair of goals.

Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) each scored once.

Kerchner, Larsen, Stiebler and Thompson all recorded two assists while Wilson assisted on one goal. Defensively, McRuer paced Grove City with four steals while Ewing and Wilson both had three takeaways. In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped 16 shots. Grove City owned a 44-28 edge in shots.

Grove City will host Mercyhurst Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in CWPA Western Division action. Grove City will then host Gannon Saturday night at 8 p.m. in the Western Division finale.
