Grove City rallies for first win ever over Gannon

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team concluded Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division play with a come-from-behind, 9-8 victory over visiting Gannon Saturday night in the Grove City College Pool on Senior Night. It is Grove City's first-ever win over Gannon in women's water polo action. Grove City finished Western Division play at 4-3. The Wolverines are now 14-15 overall.

Grove City trailed 7-5 early in the third period but rallied to tie the game on goals from freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University). Gannon led 8-7 entering the fourth period but a goal from Grove City freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) 46 seconds into the quarter tied the match at 8-8.

Grove City pulled ahead with 2:04 left in regulation on a goal from freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell).

Wilson scored twice in the first 3:07 to give Grove City an early 2-0 lead. Wilson finished the evening with five goals while Stiebler scored twice. Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), McRuer and Thompson all recorded one assist.

Wilson recorded four steals while in goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped 19 of 27 shots.

Grove City honored seniors Ewing, Meghan Kincaid (Eagle River, Alaska/Homeschooled) and Larsen prior to Saturday night's match.

Grove City will compete in the CWPA Western Division Championships next weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.
