Wolverines 1-1 at CWPA Western Division Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team went 1-1 in first-day action at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships Saturday afternoon, hosted by the University of Michigan. Grove City, the No. 4 seed, dropped an 8-7 decision to No. 5 Gannon in the quarterfinal round. Grove City bounced back for a 12-4 victory over Penn State Behrend later Saturday afternoon.

Against Gannon, Grove City (15-16 overall) fell behind 4-1 in the first period and could not fully complete its comeback effort. Freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) fired in three goals against Gannon while senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) both scored twice.

Freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) assisted on two goals while Wilson and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) each recorded one assist. In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped eight of 16 Gannon shots.

Seven different Grove City players scored in the Wolverines' win over Penn State Behrend. Freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) fired in three goals while Wilson, McRuer and Ewing all scored twice. Thompson, senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and junior Valerie Smith (Essex, Vt./Trinity Baptist) each scored once.

Ewing and McRuer both tallied three assists. Juncker, Larsen, Stiebler, junior Ria Swanekamp (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) and Wilson all assisted on one goal apiece. Stiebler stopped 11 of 15 shots in goal.

Grove City will play Mercyhurst Sunday at 11 a.m.
