Grove City 5th at Western Division Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned a 7-3 victory over Mercyhurst Sunday in the fifth-place match at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan. Grove City is now 16-16 overall.

Grove City led wire-to-wire after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Balanced scoring bolstered Grove City as six different Wolverine players scored goals.

Freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) scored twice for Grove City while senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton), freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all scored once.

McRuer handed out a pair of assists while Ewing and Wilson also recorded an assist. Thompson paced Grove City in the field on defense with four steals.

Junior goalkeeper Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped 13 of 16 shots in goal.

Grove City's fifth-place finish at the CWPA Western Division Championships is the program's best in its eight-year history. The Wolverines have been invited to participate in the Collegiate III National Championships in Santa Cruz, Calif. May 4-6.
