Wolverines open Collegiate III Championships

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened play at the three-day, season-ending Collegiate III National Championships with a 10-8 loss to No. 2 seed Cal Lutheran Friday afternoon in pool play at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Sixth-seeded Grove City (16-17 overall) trailed 8-4 in the second half before rallying to forge an 8-8 tie. However, Cal Lutheran scored twice late in the fourth period to secure the win.

Senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) scored three times for Grove City while freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) scored twice. Sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University), freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all scored one goal each.

McRuer and Thompson both had two assists while Juncker, freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) all assisted one goal apiece. McRuer and Stiebler both recorded five steals.

In goal, junior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii./Newberg, Ore.) stopped 14 of 24 shots faced.

Grove City continues pool play Friday night at 10 p.m. Eastern against No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
