Grove City goes 2-1 at Collegiate III Championships

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team is 18-18 overall after the second day of the 2007 Collegiate III National Championships, hosted by the University of California at Santa Cruz. Saturday afternoon, Grove City rolled to an 11-3 victory over Western Pennsylvania rival Washington & Jefferson in pool play. In Saturday's second match, Grove City picked up a 15-7 win over Macalester (Minn.) in inter-pool play.

Grove City's 18 wins are a new single-season program record. The 2004 team won 17 matches.

Junior goalkeeper Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) anchored the Grove City defense by stopping 18 of 21 shots faced. Offensively, freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) and sophomore Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) both fired in three goals for the Wolverines.

Senior Virginia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and freshman Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored twice. Sophomore Kristen Kerchner (West Lake Village, Calif./West Lake) scored once. Thompson, Kerchner and freshman Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) both assisted on two goals while Wilson and senior Caitlin Ewing (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) each had one assist.

Kerchner added five steals for the Wolverines, who went 1-2 in pool play.

Against Macalester, Grove City stormed to an 11-2 halftime lead en route to the win. Freshman Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Wilson and McRuer all scored three times while Larsen and Ewing each scored twice. Kerchner and Thompson also tallied goals for Grove City.

Ewing handed out four assists while McRuer recorded three assists. Kerchner, Larsen, Stiebler and Wilson all had one assist each. Stiebler also contributed five steals and a pair of blocks while McRuer and Ewing each had four steals. Walter stopped 11 shots.

Late Friday night, Grove City dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision to third-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in pool play. Wilson and Stiebler each scored twice while McRuer added a goal. Juncker, Kerchner and Thompson all had one assist each. Ewing, McRuer and Stiebler all had three steals.

In goal, Walter stopped 15 of 22 shots. The Wolverines were tagged with five five-meter penalties in the defeat.

Grove City will face UC-Santa Cruz Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
