Wolverines fall twice in California

ORANGE, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened its ninth season of intercollegiate play Saturday by dropping a pair of matches at Chapman University. Grove City began play Saturday with a 12-5 setback against Occidental (Calif.). The Wolverines then dropped a 10-4 decision to host Chapman Saturday night.

Sophomore Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded a hat trick against Occidental while junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored once each.

Freshman Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) assisted on two goals while Thompson and junior Monica Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each had one assist. In goal, senior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped six shots.

In the nightcap, Stiebler scored twice while McRuer and sophomore Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) both scored once. Thompson and McRuer both registered assists.

Defensively, Thompson and Walter each had three steals. Walter stopped six shots.

Grove City will conclude its road trip Sunday against NAIA Fresno Pacific at 11 a.m. Eastern.
